What is a Hockey Stick Curve?

  1. Duh. It's the curve at the end of a hockey stick. My preference is a light mid-heel curve at a 5.5 lie. I'm just like Mike Modano, but I don't skate as fast, shoot as hard, stickhandle as well, and I'm not as good looking. But I'm less of a wuss .
  2. Apparently it is also a controversy over global warming . Yeah, I got nothing on that.
  3. A chart used by entrepreneurs and salepeople to illustrate exponential growth following a short, flat incubation period. It's extremely convenient for someone trying to pitch a business venture because it
    1. makes potential investors instinctively drool over the prospect of huge return on investment, but also
    2. buys time to burn any cash invested, effectively building in an excuse for initial failure, which, almost inevitably, leads to total failure. In 1998 it was common for mobile-related startups to bandy these things around.
A typical Hockey Stick Curve chart, circa 1998
In 2007 it looks like this:

I guess the more things change the more things stay the same.

I'm back

OK, I was never actually here. I've been ridiculously busy at work and starting up my personal blog just hasn't been a priority. However, over the past several months there have been many a time in which I've had a thought that I wanted to expound upon further without a proper medium for it so I thought, welp, might as well start up my blog again. Here we go then...

New Year's Resolution #3 (Welcome to the site)

In addition to my standard New Year's Resolutions of not being late anymore and going to bed earlier so I can wake up earlier, I've also added "keep some sort of journal" to the list. Might as well take the modern radical transparent approach and start a blog, eh?
This blog will mainly be for my random daily spiels, but my random spiels quite often with involve tech related stuff. Hopefully my thoughts will be of use to some people, but if not, hey, it's all really for posterity.
I guess I should say a few things about myself: I've been building and working on all sorts of facets of the web for the past ten years and have been working in particular in the mobile web space off and on for most of those years. I've worked at Sun, Excite (which later became Excite@Home), Earthlink, and Yahoo! and now I'm at a mobile entertainment company called Hands-On Mobile.
I'm going to use this blog to think out loud (read: rant and rave). I will probably have something to say about all sorts of developments in the world of technology, but the mobile web is where I really start to foam at the mouth. Dealing with device and browser fragmentation has been the bane of my existence for almost as long as I can remember working, so if you have had to deal with that sort of crap (and you most likely will have if you work in the mobile web space), then we'll have lots to talk about. I will inevitably throw in some random other thoughts as well, including but not limited to hockey, finance, personal development, and crap that I find useful or interesting on the web.
Welcome to my blog and I hope you find what I write useful, or at least amusing.
